An extremely rare eastern stater of Alexander III copying Amphipolis

KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’, 336-323 BC. Stater (Gold, 18 mm, 8.61 g, 9 h), uncertain mint in the East, circa 325-300. Head of Athena to right, wearing crested Corinthian helmet decorated with a coiled serpent. Rev. [A]ΛEΞANΔΡOΥ Nike standing front, head to left, with her wings spread, holding laurel wreath in her right hand and stylis in her left; to left, thunderbolt. Hersh, Additions, -. Price -, cf. 164 ('Amphipolis'). Stack's Bowers Galleries Summer Auction (2022), 33009 (same obverse die). An extremely rare and interesting issue, perhaps the second known example. Some die wear and with a few minor marks, otherwise, good extremely fine.

Ex Leu Web Auction 28, 9-14 December 2023, 830 and previously from a European collection, formed before 2005.

The types of this beautiful piece match the regular Price 164 from Amphipolis, but style and fabric are clearly eastern, although when and by whom the piece was issued is unclear.
